The context of the story is in the world of Orience which is divided into four great nations. Each of these nations has a crystal that brings prosperity, and a peace treaty was signed to avoid any conflict. Marshal Cid will take advantage of a combination of circumstances to lead the assault on other nations, with advanced technology. The war rages again and Suzaku, the capital of Rubrum, will not escape the turmoil. It is in this city – which has an academy for learning magic – that we begin the story, under enemy fire.
More specifically, we are following class zero which will find itself on the front line. Teenagers who, according to an ancient legend, dream of becoming the legendary hero Agito who would have the power to prevent a strange phenomenon from compromising the future of Orience. But every legend has its source, and events may take an even more tragic turn than this war suggests.
